Breaking News

Debkafile Reporting today that:

Tehran and Damascus are gearing up for a pre-emptive Syrian attack on Israel to ward off a US strike on Iran’s nuclear sites

October 8, 2006, 9:52 AM (GMT+02:00)

Our military and Washington sources read as preparatory justification the Syrian ruler Bashar Asad’s statement Saturday, Oct. 7, that he expects an Israeli attack.

He was speaking in an interview to Kuwaiti paper al-Anba.

Asad’s Iranian-backed war plan would serve the purpose of forcing the Americans to divide their military assets between a strike against Iran and the defense of their allies in the Persia Gulf, Israel and US forces in Iraq. Both are seriously looking at a Syrian attack on the Golan which would escalate into a full-blown Syrian-Israeli war and a second Hizballah assault from Lebanon...

U.S. pays to clear cluster bombs

The United States is paying $9 million to clear explosives in southern Lebanon, most of them cluster bombs fired by Israel.

Of funds budgeted for munitions clearance since this summer’s Israel-Hezbollah war, $5 million from the Pentagon will go toward “supporting the Lebanese Army Engineer Regiment’s clearing cluster munitions and other unexploded ordinance in south Lebanon,” according to a State Department accounting released Wednesday.

Human rights groups have criticized Israel for using the deadly weapons, which scatter hard-to-find bomblets over a wide area. Some of the cluster-bombs were U.S.-made. Israel has said its actions conformed to international law.

Johnny Abdo: Former Lebanese Army Intelligence Chief and Ambassador to France says: 'Lebanese Party,' Not Hizbullah, Involved in Bombings

Former Ambassador Johnny Abdo has said a "Lebanese party" and not Hizbullah was involved in the series of bombings and assassinations that struck the country last year.
"A Lebanese party, not Hizbullah, is involved in the bombings that took place after March 14," Abdo, who resides in France, told Giselle Khoury's "Bil Arabi" program on Al Arabiya TV channel on Thursday.

He also warned that Premier Fouad Saniora, Parliament's majority leader Saad Hariri and Druze leader Walid Jumblat were "in the sphere of danger."

About Hizbullah's demands for a national unity government, Abdo said such attempts are aimed at undermining efforts to set up an international tribunal to try ex-Premier Rafik Hariri's assassins.

Such an attempt, Abdo said, "could be summarized in undermining the international tribunal and next year's presidential elections, and aim at creating a vacuum."

He also described Hizbullah's victory as "strategic" and said it was "wrong to talk about the fate of Hizbullah's arms in this period."

Johnny Abdo Says Assad was Aware of Hariri's Murder Beforehand

Lebanon's former Intelligence Chief Johnny Abdo has publicly accused Syria's secret service apparatus and affiliated Lebanese security departments in President Lahoud's regime of assassinating ex-Premier Hariri, asserting that President Assad was aware of the murder beforehand.

Abdo, who headed the army's intelligence apparatus during the 1976-1982 reign of the late President Elias Sarkis in the early years of the civil war and one of the most famous intelligence officers in Lebanon for the last few decades. He was a very close friend to Rafic Hariri and his family, made the charge in an interview aired by Hariri's FUTURE-TV network Wednesday night April 27, 2005. The accusation was highlighted by the Beirut press Thursday morning.

Abdo, who served also as Lebanon's ambassador to France after the civil war and before his retirement, has singled out Brig. Gen. Mustafa Hamadan, Lahoud's closest military aide who commands the army's presidential brigade, had set up with other officers a unit that long shadowed Hariri before the assassination.

Hamdan, Abdo charged, was behind attempts to remove vital evidence from the assassination scene at the St. George beach resort in downtown Beirut, including cars wrecked by the one-ton bomb blast. He also attempted to clean up the location, Abdo said.

"All this suggested that there were executing assassins and others trying to cover up," Abdo said.

Asked by interviewer Ali Hamadeh whether he believed that Syrian President Bashar Assad was aware that these intelligence services have assassinated Hariri, Abdo said "yes

The Presidential Palace on Thursday issued a statement denying Abdo's accusation to Hamdan, saying it was baseless.

U.N. chief investigator Serge Brammertz on Friday briefed the Security Council on former premier Rafik Hariri's murder, underscoring progress in his probe but calling for continued international backing.

Lebanese Army Helicopters Patrol Lebanon-Syria Border for 1st Time

Lebanese Air Force

Lebanese army helicopters have started patrolling the Lebanon-Syria border for the first time, Lebanese security officials and witnesses said Wednesday.

Air Force helicopters began over-flights along Lebanon's eastern and northern borders with Syria in an attempt to control the porous frontier and help prevent smuggling operations, said the officials. The move was expected to help meet a key requirement of a U.N.-brokered cease-fire resolution that ended 34 days of fighting between Hizbullah fighters and Israeli troops last month.[ News ]

Rice Describes Lebanon Situation as 'Very Fragile,' Warns of Possible Murder Attempts
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has said the situation in Lebanon was still "very fragile" following the Israeli offensive on Lebanon, and warned of possible assassination attempts of figures associated with the March 14 group and the moderate consensus.

Rice also said that "what really is going on in the Middle East, the kind of sharpening between extremist forces and moderate forces," adding that "what will be interesting and important is how that plays out over the next, now, probably several years."

"But on the one side, clearly, the moderate Arab states, Saudi, Egypt, Jordan, the weak but democratizing moderates in Iraq, Lebanon,– and by that, I mean Maliki, Saniora, Abu Mazen in the Palestinian Territories; and then on the other side, Hizbullah, Hamas, and really supported by Iranian influence and sort of Syrian transit," she said.

Rice's remarks came in three separate interviews with the N.Y. Times, The N.Y. Post and the Washington Post released Monday and Tuesday.[ News ]

Hizbullah has been transporting rockets and heavy weaponry to Palestinian camps in south Lebanon just a few miles from the Israeli border, according to Lebanese officials.

The officials told WND the office of Lebanese Prime Minister Faud Sinora sent a letter last week to Abbas Zakir, the Palestinian Authority's most senior representative in Lebanon, outlining the alleged Hizbullah weapons transfers into Palestinian camps. Geagea to Hizbullah: Choose Between Loyalty to Lebanon or Syria
Christian leader Samir Geagea defied Hizbullah and its followers to prove loyalty for Lebanon before demanding a change in government, insisting that allegiance to Syria would not achieve national unity.

In a massive rally that attracted tens of thousands of Christians, almost matching the masses that gathered Friday for Hizbullah's so-called 'divine victory' congregation, Geagea said it was impossible for any Lebanese faction "to act unilaterally and demand a national unity government. They have to first accept national unity and then demand a government of national unity," Geagea said at the rally in the Kisrwan stronghold of Harissa under a giant statue of the virgin Mary.

Several MPs belonging to the March 14 forces attended the rally, which was held to commemorate the Martyrs of the Lebanese forces during the 1975-1990 civil war.

It was the first time that Geagea, a political prisoner freed from jail in 2005, attended the annual mass.

The rally came two days after the Syrian-backed Hizbullah held a massive demonstration in Beirut attended by hundreds of thousands to celebrate its "victory" in the devastating July-August war with Israel.

Geagea send a strong warning to Hizbullah that its refusal to disarm was the main cause of recent divisions in Lebanon, reminiscent of the splits that caused the 1975 civil war. "The nation shall rise only when we find a solution to the weapons … there can not be a state competing with a statelet," he said backing allegations that Hizbullah had evolved into a state within a state challenging national sovereignty.

In an effort to reassure skeptics worried about interference in Lebanon's internal affairs with the influx of international forces to Lebanon under the banner of the United Nations, Geagea said "rest assured UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) will not interfere in our internal affairs nor will we allow it."

Geagea insisted Syria still did not recognize Lebanon as an independent, sovereign country and as such it refuses to demarcate the borders. "To date Syria is still striving to wrest control of Lebanon," Geagea said.

Indirectly referring to Hizbullah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah speech on Friday, Geagea said there were factions in Lebanon that are seeking to undermine the 1989 Taef agreement that ended the civil war.

"Before demanding a national unity government they must work to achieve national unity," Geagea said. "They can not take pride in relations with Syria and at the same time claim allegiance to Lebanon."  Naharnet

Geagea scoffs at Hizbullah's claims of 'victory'

Anti-Syrian Christian leader Samir Geagea scoffed Sunday at Hizbullah's claims of victory in the war with Israel and avowals that it wanted a strong state in Lebanon. "We are the victors, and yet we do not feel it was victory but rather that a real catastrophe befell our country, and that our fate and destiny are at the mercy of the winds," the Lebanese Forces (LF) leader and member of the "March 14" political group told a rally attended by tens of thousands of supporters.

Crowds flocked to the hilltop Maronite cathedral in Harissa north of Beirut, site of a giant statue of the Virgin Mary, for a mass at the rally, which was staged as a memorial for LF "martyrs" who were killed during the 1975-1990 Civil War.

"We are the victors because it was us who were demanding the [Lebanese] Army's deployment [in South Lebanon], backed by UNIFIL [peacekeepers], while they were opposed," said Geagea.

In a reference to Hizbullah, Geagea said: "Some say that they support the formation of a strong, just and capable state while their acts are hampering the creation of such a state."

"They demand a strong state, but how can a strong state be built with a statelet within its midst? How can it be done with arms and ammunition continuing to flow in, when they force the state to follow their own schedule?" asked Geagea.

"We say to them that once we find a solution to the arms, it will be possible to build a strong state," he said, remaining calm throughout his speech.

"Those tears expressed the exact feelings of the people," he said, referring to Nasrallah's criticism of Premier Fouad Siniora, who wept openly while describing destruction during the war.

It was "out of the question to speak of victory," after more than 1,200 people were killed in Lebanon alone, overwhelmingly civilians, and billions of dollars in damage were inflicted on the country, he said.

The annual event, which was held this year for the first time in 11 years in the presence of the LF leader, came two days after Hizbullah held a giant demonstration in Beirut attended by hundreds of thousands to celebrate what it called a victory in the devastating war with Israel.

For the first time in 12 years, Geagea entered Harissa Cathedral accompanied by his wife, Strida, amid the applause of thousands of LF supporters.

"They said the resistance had protected Lebanon from falling into a civil war ... We say that Lebanese leaders and people are the ones who kept Lebanon away from a civil war," Geagea said. "We are the resistance and we will always be. As we were heroes of the military resistance, we will also be heroes of the peaceful political resistance."

Geagea also said that no weapon would stop his party's calls for Hizbullah to disarm.

"They say that there is no army in the world capable of making them drop their weapons ... We say that there is no weapon that can make us accept this fact," he said.

He added that power could not be measured by the arsenal one had but by unity among all Lebanese parties.

The event drew mainly Christian Lebanese from several regions, notably from the North and Beirut. The crowd chanted: "God, Lebanon, and the doctor [Geagea's nickname] only."

Tens of thousands of supporters blocked the roads to the cathedral. MPs and ministers rode in cable cars to get to the hilltop, with reports that Social Affairs Minister Nayla Mouawad hitched a ride on the back of a motorcycle. Justice Minister Charles Rizk was unable to make it due to the heavy traffic on the roads.

With their white LF flags bearing the cedar tree symbol of Lebanon and their shirts stamped with the sharpened cross of the right-wing party, young supporters chanted slogans against both Hizbullah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah and his ally, General Michel Aoun.

Among the attendees were: Archbishop Roland Abu Jaoude representing Maronite Patriarch Nasrallah Butros Sfeir, as well as Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Michel Pharaon and Future Movement MP Riad Rahal representing Prime Minister Fouad Siniora and Speaker Nabih Berri, respectively.

Prominent March 14 Forces were also present at the event, including former President Amin Gemayel. But, the main two March 14 Forces leaders, parliamentary majority leader MP Saad Hariri and Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblatt were not present.

During his speech, Geagea praised Hariri and Jumblatt, saying that Lebanon "would not have risen again had the blood of their martyrs not mixed with that of the LF's martyrs."

He also lashed out at Leb-anese officials who have called for a national unity government.

"There is no national unity government without national unity and apart from the Taif Accord," he said.
