Our military and Washington sources read as preparatory justification the Syrian ruler Bashar Asad’s statement Saturday, Oct. 7, that he expects an Israeli attack.
He was speaking in an interview to Kuwaiti paper al-Anba.
Asad’s Iranian-backed war plan would serve the purpose of forcing the Americans to divide their military assets between a strike against Iran and the defense of their allies in the Persia Gulf, Israel and US forces in Iraq. Both are seriously looking at a Syrian attack on the Golan which would escalate into a full-blown Syrian-Israeli war and a second Hizballah assault from Lebanon...

U.S. pays to clear cluster bombs
The United States is paying $9 million to clear explosives in southern Lebanon, most of them cluster bombs fired by Israel.
Of funds budgeted for munitions clearance since this summer’s Israel-Hezbollah war, $5 million from the Pentagon will go toward “supporting the Lebanese Army Engineer Regiment’s clearing cluster munitions and other unexploded ordinance in south Lebanon,” according to a State Department accounting released Wednesday.
Human rights groups have criticized Israel for using the deadly weapons, which scatter hard-to-find bomblets over a wide area. Some of the cluster-bombs were U.S.-made. Israel has said its actions conformed to international law.

Johnny Abdo: Former Lebanese Army Intelligence Chief and Ambassador to France says: 'Lebanese Party,' Not Hizbullah, Involved in Bombings
Former Ambassador Johnny Abdo has said a "Lebanese party" and not Hizbullah was involved in the series of bombings and assassinations that struck the country last year.
"A Lebanese party, not Hizbullah, is involved in the bombings that took place after March 14," Abdo, who resides in France, told Giselle Khoury's "Bil Arabi" program on Al Arabiya TV channel on Thursday.
He also warned that Premier Fouad Saniora, Parliament's majority leader Saad Hariri and Druze leader Walid Jumblat were "in the sphere of danger."
About Hizbullah's demands for a national unity government, Abdo said such attempts are aimed at undermining efforts to set up an international tribunal to try ex-Premier Rafik Hariri's assassins.
Such an attempt, Abdo said, "could be summarized in undermining the international tribunal and next year's presidential elections, and aim at creating a vacuum."
He also described Hizbullah's victory as "strategic" and said it was "wrong to talk about the fate of Hizbullah's arms in this period."

Johnny Abdo Says Assad was Aware of Hariri's Murder Beforehand
Lebanon's former Intelligence Chief Johnny Abdo has publicly accused Syria's secret service apparatus and affiliated Lebanese security departments in President Lahoud's regime of assassinating ex-Premier Hariri, asserting that President Assad was aware of the murder beforehand.
Abdo, who headed the army's intelligence apparatus during the 1976-1982 reign of the late President Elias Sarkis in the early years of the civil war and one of the most famous intelligence officers in Lebanon for the last few decades. He was a very close friend to Rafic Hariri and his family, made the charge in an interview aired by Hariri's FUTURE-TV network Wednesday night April 27, 2005. The accusation was highlighted by the Beirut press Thursday morning.
Abdo, who served also as Lebanon's ambassador to France after the civil war and before his retirement, has singled out Brig. Gen. Mustafa Hamadan, Lahoud's closest military aide who commands the army's presidential brigade, had set up with other officers a unit that long shadowed Hariri before the assassination.
Hamdan, Abdo charged, was behind attempts to remove vital evidence from the assassination scene at the St. George beach resort in downtown Beirut, including cars wrecked by the one-ton bomb blast. He also attempted to clean up the location, Abdo said.
"All this suggested that there were executing assassins and others trying to cover up," Abdo said.
Asked by interviewer Ali Hamadeh whether he believed that Syrian President Bashar Assad was aware that these intelligence services have assassinated Hariri, Abdo said "yes
The Presidential Palace on Thursday issued a statement denying Abdo's accusation to Hamdan, saying it was baseless.

Brammertz Briefs Security Council on Progress in Hariri Murder Probe
U.N. chief investigator Serge Brammertz on Friday briefed the Security Council on former premier Rafik Hariri's murder, underscoring progress in his probe but calling for continued international backing.
He said his enquiry panel "is satisfied with the progress made so far" but needs help and full support from U.N. member states on technical, legal and judicial matters relevant to the investigation.

Lebanese Army Helicopters Patrol Lebanon-Syria Border for 1st Time

Lebanese army helicopters have started patrolling the Lebanon-Syria border for the first time, Lebanese security officials and witnesses said Wednesday.
Air Force helicopters began over-flights along Lebanon's eastern and northern borders with Syria in an attempt to control the porous frontier and help prevent smuggling operations, said the officials. The move was expected to help meet a key requirement of a U.N.-brokered cease-fire resolution that ended 34 days of fighting between Hizbullah fighters and Israeli troops last month.[ News ]

Rice Describes Lebanon Situation as 'Very Fragile,' Warns of Possible Murder Attempts U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has said the situation in Lebanon was still "very fragile" following the Israeli offensive on Lebanon, and warned of possible assassination attempts of figures associated with the March 14 group and the moderate consensus.
Rice also said that "what really is going on in the Middle East, the kind of sharpening between extremist forces and moderate forces," adding that "what will be interesting and important is how that plays out over the next, now, probably several years."
"But on the one side, clearly, the moderate Arab states, Saudi, Egypt, Jordan, the weak but democratizing moderates in Iraq, Lebanon,– and by that, I mean Maliki, Saniora, Abu Mazen in the Palestinian Territories; and then on the other side, Hizbullah, Hamas, and really supported by Iranian influence and sort of Syrian transit," she said.
Rice's remarks came in three separate interviews with the N.Y. Times, The N.Y. Post and the Washington Post released Monday and Tuesday.[ News ]

Hizbullah moving rockets to Palestinian camps
Lebanese officials say terror group transporting rockets, heavy weaponry to Palestinian camps in south of country, just few miles from Israeli border

Hizbullah has been transporting rockets and heavy weaponry to Palestinian camps in south Lebanon just a few miles from the Israeli border, according to Lebanese officials.
The officials told WND the office of Lebanese Prime Minister Faud Sinora sent a letter last week to Abbas Zakir, the Palestinian Authority's most senior representative in Lebanon, outlining the alleged Hizbullah weapons transfers into Palestinian camps. The letter noted "unusual activity" in and near the Palestinian camps, including the coming and going of trucks suspected of carrying weapons. [ INTEL ]
